Mubboo Verdict
A historic beachfront resort for couples and seniors seeking classic Hawaiian charm, though dated rooms and limited dining may deter some.
Insider tip: Despite its luxury positioning, multiple reviewers report worn rooms and a steady loss of amenities, such as no in-room dining, making the steep prices feel unjustified for a property coasting on its history.

“The Royal Hawaiian remains my favourite hotel in Waikīkī. The setting is unmatched. The Mailani Tower oceanfront rooms are beautiful, the pool is intimate and peaceful, and the beachfront location remains one of the best in Hawaii. What concerns me is the gradual loss of amenities and experience at a time when prices continue to rise.”
“I love the hotel and always stay there however the hotel needs a refresh. Lobby carpets need a good clean or refresh. I would like to get a chair poolside but that is not possible unless you book in advance. Dining options are very limited. Long, long line to lunch venue and NO in-room dining!”
“While this is an iconic Waikiki institution with a beautiful exterior, that’s really all it has to offer. It is the type of hotel that will take as much as it can from you while delivering as little as possible. The rooms are old and tired and the beds extremely worn and uncomfortable.”
“If you want Luxury with the BEST location on Wakiki Beach, this place is for you! This is our favorite resort on Wakiki Beach! We have stayed here so many times and each time it lives up to our expectations. We stayed in the historic building this time and loved our beautiful room.”
