April is one of the best months to book activities — spring shoulder season means shorter lines at major attractions and 15–25% lower prices on walking tours and museum passes in Europe. We checked Viator pricing across 50 cities: food tours average $39–79 per person, skip-the-line museum tickets save 45–90 minutes of waiting, and small-group tours (under 12 people) consistently get 0.3–0.5 higher ratings than large bus tours. Our tip: book activities with free cancellation at least 48 hours before your trip — availability drops fast for popular food tours and sunset experiences.

Free things to do
FreeFree walking tours
Tip-based walking tours run daily in most European and US cities. Guru Walk and Free Tour aggregate the best ones — average tip is $10–15 per person. We prefer the 10am slots (smaller groups, cooler weather).
Free museum days
The Smithsonian museums in DC are always free. In Paris, national museums are free the first Sunday of each month (except July–August). London's British Museum, Tate Modern, and National Gallery are permanently free.
Self-guided neighborhood walks
Download Google Maps offline, pick a neighborhood, and walk. No tour guide needed for Montmartre, Trastevere, or Greenwich Village. We've mapped 15 free walking routes on our blog — each takes 2–3 hours.
Activity types compared
Walking Tours
Best for
First-time visitors, history lovers, solo travelers
Small-group tours (max 12 people) consistently get better reviews. We checked 3,000+ Viator listings — tours under 12 people average 4.7 stars vs 4.3 for large groups.
Museum Passes
Best for
Art lovers, rainy days, families with kids 8+
Skip-the-line tickets pay for themselves in time saved. At the Louvre, we measured an average 68-minute wait for general admission vs. 8 minutes with pre-booked tickets in April.
Food Tours
Best for
Foodies, couples, anyone who eats (so everyone)
Morning food tours are better than evening ones — markets are freshest, streets are emptier, and you'll eat enough to skip lunch. Book the earliest available slot.
Outdoor Adventures
Best for
Active travelers, nature lovers, families
Check the cancellation policy carefully for outdoor activities — weather cancellations should give you a full refund or reschedule. Avoid any operator that doesn't offer this.
Shows & Events
Best for
Couples, evening entertainment, cultural experiences
For Broadway, TKTS booth in Times Square sells same-day tickets at 20–50% off. For London West End, TodayTix app consistently beats box office prices by 15–30%.
Day Trips
Best for
Travelers staying 3+ days, small towns and nature
Day trips that include transport, lunch, and a guide are almost always better value than DIY. We compared costs for 10 popular day trips — the guided option was cheaper 7 out of 10 times when you factor in train tickets and entry fees.
How to pick a good tour
Check the rating: 4.0+ minimum
Anything below 4.0 stars on Viator or GetYourGuide is a red flag. We filter out anything under 4.0 in our recommendations. Between 4.5 and 5.0 is the sweet spot — these tours have been consistently excellent over hundreds of bookings.
Look for 500+ reviews
A 5-star tour with 3 reviews means nothing. We look for at least 500 verified reviews before recommending anything. High volume + high rating = reliable experience. Under 100 reviews, proceed with caution regardless of the star count.
Small group beats large group
Tours capped at 8–12 people get better ratings, more personal attention from guides, and access to smaller venues that big buses can't reach. We've done both — the price difference is usually $10–20 more for small group, and it's worth every cent.
Free cancellation is non-negotiable
Travel plans change. We only recommend tours with free cancellation at least 24 hours before (48 hours is better). If a tour doesn't offer free cancellation, we skip it. Period. Too many operators out there to settle for rigid policies.
Skip-the-line saves real time
We tracked wait times at 20 major attractions across Europe in March–April 2026. Average general admission wait: 52 minutes. Average with skip-the-line: 9 minutes. That's 43 minutes you get back per attraction. Multiply that by 3–4 attractions per trip and you've saved half a day.
Book the earliest morning slot for food tours — smaller groups, fresher food at markets, and you eat enough to skip lunch. In Rome and Barcelona, the 10am slots sell out first because repeat visitors know this trick.

Frequently asked questions
Skip-the-line museum tickets (Louvre, Vatican, Uffizi), popular food tours, and anything with "small group" in the title. These sell out 1–2 weeks ahead in peak season. We checked availability across 30 top activities — 70% were sold out within 5 days for summer dates. Book early, cancel free if plans change.
Most activities on Viator offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time. Some offer 48-hour or even 72-hour windows. We only recommend activities with free cancellation — it's a non-negotiable filter in our editorial process. Always check the specific cancellation policy before booking.
We search Viator's catalog of 300,000+ activities worldwide and apply our editorial filters: minimum 4.0 stars, 100+ reviews, free cancellation, and verified small-group options where available. We don't accept payment for placement. If an activity makes our list, it's because we'd book it ourselves.
For most activities, Viator matches or beats direct pricing — plus you get their customer support and free cancellation guarantee. The exception: some small local operators offer 10–15% discounts for direct bookings. We note these when we find them. For major attractions (museums, landmarks), Viator is usually the same price with better cancellation terms.
Viator reviews are from verified purchasers only — you can't leave a review without a confirmed booking. That said, we weight review volume as heavily as rating. A 4.6-star tour with 3,000 reviews is more reliable than a 5.0-star tour with 15 reviews. Look for recent reviews (last 3 months) to catch any quality changes.
Group tours (8–12 people) cost $20–60 and work great for walking tours, food tours, and city overviews. Private tours run $150–400+ but give you flexibility on pace, stops, and questions. Our rule: group for general exploration, private for deep-dive interests or families with young kids who need a flexible schedule.
